The white helmet and the orange dome (1946–1983)

The Browns began in 1946 with solid white helmets, which they wore through 1949. In 1950 and 1951 they used white for day games and orange for night games. From 1952 the helmet was orange with a single white stripe, and in 1961 it became orange with a brown-white-brown stripe sequence, the design still used today. Secondary TV numbers appeared on the sleeves in 1961, and sleeve stripes were silkscreened and separated in 1968 and 1969.

From 1975 to 1983 the Browns wore orange pants with brown-white-brown stripes, the look fans link to the Kardiac Kids. They wore them again, occasionally, in 2003 and 2004.

The 1984 redesign and the return of the Browns (1984–2005)

In 1984 the team redesigned its uniform with new striping, outlined numerals and solid brown or orange socks. Fans disliked it, and in 1985 the uniform went back to something close to the original. When the Browns returned in 1999 they kept the traditional design but moved TV numbers to the shoulders and widened the orange-brown-orange pants stripes. In 2002 they added an alternate orange jersey and brought back solid brown socks, the first time since 1984.

Brown pants, Nike and the all-brown era (2006–2019)

In 2006 the team returned to an older style, with gray facemasks, original sleeve stripes on the brown jersey and a darker brown. Brown pants debuted in 2008, worn in 2009 and dropped in 2010. In 2013 Cleveland wore the first all-brown combination in its history, against Buffalo on Thursday Night Football. The 2015 update used a slightly darker, more matte orange and seal brown facemasks. The 2016 Color Rush set was all brown, and from 2019 the all-brown uniform was a primary home jersey.

The modern Browns: 2020 to now

The 2020 uniform paid homage to the classic designs. In 2021, for the 75th anniversary, the team wore white uniforms that echoed 1946. A white "White Out" alternate helmet came in 2023, the first non-orange helmet since 1950. In 2025 the matte brown "Alpha Dawg" helmet joined the all-brown uniform, worn for three home games, and the look continues in 2026. The Browns helmet carries no logo. A Browns helmet logo search leads to a fact: the team has used stripes, not a logo, on the helmet, and a brown "CB" logo designed in 1965 was never used. Fans ask why the Browns logo is a helmet; the helmet is the logo. The facemask was white from 1975, gray in 2006, brown in 2015 and white again in 2024. A new Browns helmet in 2025 was the matte brown shell; the Browns helmet reveal was in July 2025.
