Who was Pat Tillman?
Tillman was a linebacker and safety at Arizona State (1994 to 1997), where he was a first-team All-American in 1997 and the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. The Cardinals took him in the seventh round (226th overall) of the 1998 draft, and he wore No. 40. In May 2002 he turned down a three-year, $3.6 million offer to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was killed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004, at age 27; the Pentagon later ruled it friendly fire. The team retired No. 40 and added him to its Ring of Honor, and the plaza at State Farm Stadium carries his name, per Wikipedia. The Pat Tillman Foundation continues his legacy.
