The history behind the throwback
Burgundy and gold have been Washington's colors since its 1937 debut in the city. In 1981 coach Joe Gibbs began the tradition of white jerseys over burgundy pants at home, the "classic" look. In 2025 the team unveiled throwback alternates based on the 1980s set, with white jerseys, burgundy pants and a gold "W" helmet logo. The 2022 rebrand brought the Commanders name; the old name appears only in that history.
Throwback in 2026
The throwback look moved from alternate to main in 2026: the classic white Super Bowl-era uniform returned as a primary look, with a glossy burgundy helmet, a three-stripe design, a gold facemask and gold pants with two stripes.
