The C stands for captain. It is not a position label and not a performance award. Captains are chosen by the team.

What does the C on an NFL jersey mean?

The C marks one of a team's captains. The league began allowing the patch in 2007, when teams could designate up to six players. Before that, captains were generally not marked on their uniforms. One 2026 source says coaches name a maximum of six captains 90 minutes before kickoff, but we could not confirm that in the rulebook.

What do the stars and the gold C mean?

Each star under the C stands for one season as captain. The C and the stars turn gold after a player has been a captain for several seasons, but sources disagree: some say four seasons and others say five. Captaincy years carry over when a player changes teams. J.J. Watt wore a gold C when he moved from the Texans to the Cardinals.

Do fan jerseys have the C?

Most fan jerseys, including Game, Limited and Elite styles, are sold without a captain's patch. Patches are usually sold separately or on special editions, so check the product photos. Our tier guide explains how jersey tiers differ.

Why the C is not on every jersey

Captains change by game and by season, and only up to six players per team wear the patch at one time. That is why a fan jersey usually leaves it off and why the same player may wear it in some games and not others.

Examples from the 2026 season

Quarterbacks and other long-time team leaders are the most common captains. Dak Prescott wears a captain's C with the Walter Payton Man of the Year patch, according to news reports. Different teams also wear tribute patches during the season, such as the Bears' No. 89 patch for Mike Ditka in October 2026.

Common questions about captains

A captain is a player the team chooses as a leader. Patch guides say captains are team-appointed rather than awarded for performance, and the C does not mean a player is the best on the team. A captain can be a quarterback, a linebacker or a special-teams player. Captaincy years carry over when a player changes teams, which is why a veteran can wear a gold C with a new club.

The patch sits on the left side of the chest on game jerseys. Some players also wear a second patch, such as the Walter Payton Man of the Year patch. Winners can keep wearing it, according to news reports.

Other patches on NFL jerseys

Patches on NFL jerseys fall into four groups: the captain's C, award patches such as the Walter Payton Man of the Year, memorial patches and anniversary patches. The patch on an NFL jersey today may be temporary: the Bears added a patch for Mike Ditka in October 2026, and a Bears patch on a jersey, GSH, honors George Halas. Our GSH guide explains the Chicago Bears patch on jersey sleeves. See our NFL jersey patches guide for award, memorial, anniversary and event patches.

NFL jersey with captain patch: do you get the C on a fan jersey?

An NFL jersey with a captain patch is usually a game-worn or special edition item. A captain jersey in the NFL is the same jersey with the C added, and most fan jerseys do not include it; check the product photos.

The captain's C is part of the uniform that Nike makes for the NFL. The patch on an NFL jersey today can be a captain's C, and a captain jersey NFL fans buy usually leaves it off. Nike has supplied NFL uniforms since 2012; the 2026 season follows the same patch rules.

NFL captain patch: other names
