Bucco Bruce, 1976 to 1996

The Buccaneers’ first logo was drawn by Lamar Sparkman, a Tampa Tribune cartoonist. It showed a mustached pirate in a plumed slouch hat, with a hoop earring and a dagger clutched in his teeth. Sparkman wanted a gallant, swashbuckling character that did not look like the Raiders’ pirate, so the figure winks instead of wearing an eye patch. St. Petersburg Times writer Hubert Mizell nicknamed him "Bucco Bruce" in February 1976, and the nickname became a symbol of the team’s early futility.

The logo was redrawn in 1992 with an open eye, a new dagger design and a crisper look that lasted five seasons. Beloit College in Wisconsin received a notice about its mirror-image buccaneer mascot, which the team dropped once the college redesigned its logo.

Skull and swords, 1997 to today

Shortly after Malcolm Glazer bought the club in January 1995, the owners said they would introduce new colors, logos and uniforms. In 1997 the Bucs changed to red and pewter with a flag-and-crossed-swords "skull and swords" logo. It has gone through three iterations. In 2003 the Raiders sued, claiming the NFL and the Buccaneers had infringed key trademark elements of the Raiders’ brand, including its pirate logo.

The team unveiled a revised logo and helmet on February 20, 2014, then new uniforms two weeks later on March 3. On April 7, 2020 it showed three new jerseys with an enlarged flag-and-crossed-swords logo and a ship logo on the sleeves.

Bucco Bruce comes back

After the 1997 change the team avoided its old orange look, and fans did not like it much at first. In 2008 the club announced that it would wear orange throwbacks for one game in 2009. The Bruce logo on those jerseys was a cleaned-up, crisper version of the 1976 to 1991 mark. For the 2025 season, a 50th-season patch used the Bucco Bruce logo on the two throwback uniforms.

Patches and commemorative marks

The Bucs have worn several patches. In 1985 they wore a patch for their tenth season, and in 1993 a "Mr C" patch in cursive script for owner Hugh Culverhouse, who was ill. In 2025 the team used three versions of a 50th-season patch: red with the skull and swords on the red jerseys, white with the skull and swords on the white jerseys, and white and orange with Bucco Bruce on the two throwback uniforms.

Logos and your jersey

A jersey carries the marks that were current for its style. A throwback listing shows older marks, and a current home or away listing shows the current ones, so check the style name and the product photo before you order.
