The standing buffalo
The Bills began in 1960 modeled on the Detroit Lions, with Honolulu blue, silver and white uniforms and silver helmets that had no logo. In 1962 a standing red bison appeared on white helmets, and the team switched to red, white and blue. The standing buffalo lasted until 1973.
The charging buffalo
A charging buffalo logo, designed by Stevens Wright, replaced the standing bison in 1974. The helmet shell turned red in 1984. In 2002 a redesign under general manager Tom Donahoe darkened the blue and added nickel gray accents and red side panels. Fan backlash kept the logo.
Royal blue and Nike
A 2011 update returned to royal blue and white helmets and the Bills began wearing white at home regularly. Nike's uniform was unveiled in April 2012. The Bills wore an all-red Color Rush for the first time on November 12, 2015, and a red top with white pants in December 2024.
Red helmets and the Christmas look
The red charging buffalo helmet, worn from 1984 to 2010, returned as an alternate, announced on July 22, 2025. In 2026 the team has confirmed a red helmet with a white jersey and white pants for Christmas Day at Denver. Those helmets are separate from the red alternate jersey scheduled for the Week 18 home finale.
Cold Front and Nickel City
In 2025 the 1984–2010 red charging buffalo helmet returned as an alternate and the all-white Cold Front Rivalries uniform debuted. In 2026 the Bills unveiled the all-gray Nickel City uniform with a blue helmet. Read our Bills jerseys 2026 guide for the dates.
