Buffalo Bills logo history by year
The table traces the main logo changes from the first mark to the current one. Dates come from the sources below; where sources disagree we say so.
| Year | Change | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1960–61 | No helmet logo; the helmets were silver with numbers only | The uniforms were based on the Detroit Lions |
| 1962 | Standing red bison adopted on a white helmet | Colors changed to red, white and blue |
| 1974 | Charging blue bison with a red streak replaces the standing bison | Designed by aerospace designer Stevens Wright; still the primary logo |
| 1984 | Helmet shell changes from white to red | Logo unchanged; players said it gave more contrast |
| 2002 | Uniforms overhauled and a stylized B logo is released | Fan backlash led the team to keep the charging bison |
| 2011 | New uniform brings the charging bison back to a white helmet | Royal blue replaces navy |
| 2025 | Red charging buffalo helmet returns as an alternate; Cold Front uses a silver charging buffalo | First red helmet worn January 4, 2026 |
| 2026 | Nickel City alternate has a blue helmet with a red "charge" streak | All-gray set |
The current Bills logo
The current Bills logo is the charging bison in royal blue with a red streak from its horn, designed in 1974 by Stevens Wright.
We describe the logo in words and use photographs of uniforms and equipment; standalone logo artwork is not reproduced.
Why the Bills logo changed
The Bills have kept the charging bison since 1974, and the 2002 attempt at a B logo was dropped after fan backlash. Recent changes are helmets and alternates, not a new primary logo.
Bills logo, helmet and jersey today
In the Nike era the charging bison appears on the royal blue helmet, while the standing bison and the red helmet return in alternates and throwbacks. Shop Buffalo Bills jerseys, the legends jerseys and the Bills uniform history.
A logo is only part of the uniform. For colors see the Bills colors guide and for the year-by-year schedule see the Bills 2026 uniforms guide.
Primary, alternate and commemorative Bills logos
The Bills have two bison in their history. The standing red bison was the logo from 1962 and returns on throwbacks, while the charging blue bison has led since 1974. The 2002 B logo is often remembered as a fan-backlash moment and never replaced the bison.
| Era | Look | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 1962–1973 | Standing red bison on a white helmet | Standing-buffalo throwback uniforms |
| 1974–present | Charging blue bison with a red streak | Royal blue helmet and current jerseys |
| 1984–2010 | Charging bison on a red helmet | Red helmet alternate, back in 2025 |
How we built this Bills logo timeline
We collected the dates from the sources listed at the bottom, using the team's own pages where they exist and Wikipedia where they do not. Wikipedia is a secondary source, so we flag the entries where it is the only source and where two sources disagree. We left out anything we could not confirm, such as the Broncos' 1960 logo. Standalone logo artwork is not reproduced.
If you spot a date that looks wrong, check the team's own history page first. A logo can change on the helmet in one season and on the jersey in another, so the year here is the first public use, not always the first game.
What a Bills logo change means when you buy a jersey
Jerseys follow the logo of their era. A current Nike jersey carries the current mark, a throwback carries an older one, and the product page shows which. If you want an older logo on your jersey, look at the throwback jerseys and compare them with the standard home and away styles in the Buffalo Bills jerseys range.
Shop the Bills look
Nike jerseys carry the logo on the helmet and the chest in different ways, and a throwback or retro style often shows an older mark. Compare Game and Limited in our tier guide, or browse all throwback jerseys for retro and vintage options.
