The Ravens have no officially retired numbers. Wikipedia says they hold 19 out of respect for Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts, with one exception: quarterback Scott Mitchell wore it in 1999 with Unitas' permission. The other five numbers have not been issued since the players retired. A formal retirement and an unissued number are different things, so check the roster before you assume a number is closed.

The Ring of Honor is a separate honor from retirement. The team does not retire numbers, so Ring of Honor members are honored in other ways. Unitas, Lenny Moore and others from the Baltimore Colts are in the Ring of Honor too.

Why does Lamar Jackson wear 8?

Jackson explained on the Ravens’ team podcast in 2021 that he was assigned No. 8 at Louisville. His mother connected the number with new beginnings, and he kept it for that meaning. This is the personal history behind the number, rather than a Baltimore retirement or Ring of Honor designation. His official Ravens profile still lists No. 8 when checked on October 28, 2026.

Famous numbers in Ravens history

Ray Lewis wore 52 for 17 seasons and Ed Reed wore 20 for 11, and they are the two Ravens legends in our player data. Lamar Jackson's 8 is the best-selling current number in our list. Because the team does not formally retire numbers, you may one day see a new player in 52 or 20.

Can you buy any number?

Yes, as a fan jersey. A held number such as 52 or 20 is a tribute style because no current player wears it. The Ravens jersey collection lists current players first. For position ranges, see the NFL jersey number rules.

Which Ravens numbers fans buy

Jackson's 8 and Henry's 22 are the most-searched current numbers. To see how each era looked, read the Ravens uniform history, and for every style the team wears this year, see the Ravens jerseys 2026 guide.
