Years come from Wikipedia and match news reports where we checked them. The team's own retired-numbers page does not list dates.

Unofficially retired numbers

Wikipedia lists five numbers the team has withheld from other players without formally retiring them: 7 (Joe Theismann), 42 (Charley Taylor), 43 (Larry Brown), 65 (Dave Butz) and 70 (Sam Huff). We list them as unofficial because we could not confirm their status on a team page.

Famous numbers in Washington history

Number 21 is Sean Taylor's, retired in 2021 after his death in 2007. Number 28 is Darrell Green's, who played 20 seasons. Number 81 is Art Monk's. Number 9 is Sonny Jurgensen's, and 33 is Sammy Baugh's, the first number the team retired in 1953. Number 44 will join them on November 8. A number tells you the era, not the player, so always match it to a name.

Can you buy any number?

Yes. The Jayden Daniels jersey page carries a current number, and the Hail Raiser style comes in a player version too. A retired number is a tribute, not a current-player jersey. The NFL assigns number ranges by position, which affects which numbers a player can get. Our NFL jersey number rules guide covers those ranges. For team styles, start at the Washington Commanders jerseys page. On Nike jerseys the number is stitched or printed by tier, so check the listing.
