Why Cam Ward wears No. 1
The Titans retired No. 1 for Warren Moon in 2006. When the team drafted Cam Ward in 2025, Ward asked Moon to unretire it. Moon gave his blessing at Ward's introductory press conference on April 25, 2025, saying his Oilers number would likely never be worn again but Ward could carry the Titans version. Sources differ on the details of Ward's fallback number. Shop the Cam Ward jersey.

Famous numbers in Titans and Oilers history
Number 34 is Earl Campbell's, the Oilers running back whose retirement came in 1987. Number 74 belongs to Bruce Matthews, who played every line position. McNair's 9 and George's 27 mark the Titans' late-1990s and 2000s teams. The Titans say 9 and 27 were the first time any NFL team retired either number. A number tells you the era, not the player, so always match it to a name.
Can you buy any number?
Yes. The Cam Ward jersey carries a current number. A retired number is a tribute, not a current-player jersey, though Ward's 1 is the exception. The NFL assigns number ranges by position, which affects which numbers a player can get. Our NFL jersey number rules guide covers those ranges. For team styles, start at the Tennessee Titans jerseys page, including the Rivalries style. Nike makes the current jerseys, and a retired number only appears on tribute styles.
