Why the Seahawks retired No. 12
Seattle retired No. 12 on December 15, 1984, in the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos at the Kingdome. Team president Mike McCormack made the move to honor the fans for their volume and passion. Seahawks.com says Seattle was the first pro sports team to retire a jersey for its fans.
Since then, the 12th Man has become the team's best-known tradition. A pregame ceremony called "Raising the 12 Flag" began in 2003. At the Super Bowl LX banner reveal on September 9, 2026, Richard Sherman raised the flag. The Super Bowl LX championship ring also has a 12 flag on its side and 12 feathers on the bottom.
Can you buy a Seahawks jersey 12?
Yes, as a fan jersey. Check each listing for the exact style. Because no player can wear it, a Seahawks jersey 12 is a 12th Man style and carries no player name. It is the number to choose if you want to support the stadium, not one player. If you would rather wear a current star, the sections below cover the numbers that matter.

Rosters change during the season, so confirm a player is still on the team before you order a name and number.
Numbers that moved from player to player
Seahawks.com picks Deon Butler as its best No. 11, and Jermaine Kearse wore it in 2012. Jaxon Smith-Njigba wears the same number today. Number 10 is another example: Jim Zorn, the first starting quarterback in Seahawks history, wore it, and Cooper Kupp wears it on the 2026 roster. A number tells you the era, not the player, so always match it to a name.
Legends and their numbers
Seahawks.com ranks the best player to wear each number. Its picks include Russell Wilson at No. 3, Matt Hasselbeck at No. 8, Tyler Lockett at No. 16, Shaun Alexander at No. 37, K.J. Wright at No. 50 and Bobby Wagner at No. 54. For No. 24 it names Marshawn Lynch over Shawn Springs. Largent's No. 80 is retired, so no current player wears it. For a retro look, see the Seahawks throwback jerseys.
Safeties Kam Chancellor wore 31 and Earl Thomas wore 29 in the Legion of Boom era. Those numbers are not retired.
Ring of Honor numbers
The Ring of Honor is a separate honor. Largent was inducted in 1989, Easley in 2002, Kennedy in 2006 and Jones in 2014. Others in the Ring include Jim Zorn (10), Dave Brown (22), Curt Warner (28), Jacob Green (79), Dave Krieg (17), Matt Hasselbeck (8) and Shaun Alexander (37). Their numbers are not retired.
How to pick a number
Choose by player, not by number. The NFL assigns number ranges by position, which affects which numbers a player can get. Our NFL jersey number rules guide covers those ranges. For team-wide style choices, start at the Seattle Seahawks jerseys page.
Nike makes every Seattle Seahawks jersey we sell, in home, away, alternate, Rivalries and throwback styles where the team has them, so a player's number is the same on each style. Compare Game and Limited in our tier guide and shop all Seahawks jerseys.
