Joe Montana's 16 and Jerry Rice's 80
Montana's No. 16 was retired on December 15, 1997, and Rice's No. 80 on September 20, 2010. Both are the 49ers' best-known legend numbers. Steve Young's No. 8 was retired in 2008, and Ronnie Lott's No. 42 in 2003.
John Brodie's 12 and the Dilfer exception
Brodie's No. 12 was retired in 1973. Quarterback Trent Dilfer wore it in 2006 and 2007 with Brodie's permission, which unofficially unretired it as a tribute, according to Wikipedia. No one has worn it since.

The 49ers retired numbers in clusters. Joe Perry, Hugh McElhenny and Leo Nomellini were honored together in 1971. Jimmy Johnson followed in 1977, Dwight Clark in 1988 and Joe Montana in 1997. Bob St. Clair, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young and Jerry Rice came later, between 2001 and 2010. No number has been retired since Rice's in 2010 on the list we reviewed.
