The black helmet era
The Steelers were founded in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates and have always used black and gold. Black helmets arrived in 1962 and became full-time in 1963. The uniform design with gold pants and black or white jerseys was introduced in 1968 and is the base of today's look.
Throwbacks and the gold helmet
Gold helmets returned in 2007 with the 1962-style throwbacks for the team's 75th season, became the alternate in 2008 and were retired in 2012. Striped 1933/1934 throwbacks ran from 2012 to 2016. Steel Curtain-style black throwbacks were worn in 2018. In 2025 the team unveiled a gold 1933 throwback with a matte gold helmet, and in 2026 it returns for one game.
Color Rush
The all-black Color Rush uniform debuted on Christmas 2016. Team president Art Rooney II said it will likely be worn for a home night game in 2026, and the team is 9–3 in the uniform, according to Steelers Now. Our Steelers jerseys 2026 guide tracks the dates.
A new combination in Paris
On October 25, 2026 the Steelers wear their white road tops with black pants with a thick gold stripe. It is the first time they have mixed uniform pieces that way, since they normally pair the same gold pants with both home and road tops.
