Famous numbers in Vikings history

Number 10 is Fran Tarkenton's, retired in 1979. Number 88 is Alan Page's and 70 is Jim Marshall's, two members of the Purple People Eaters. Number 80 is Cris Carter's. Randy Moss is in the Ring of Honor, but Pro Football Talk notes that his number has never even been unofficially retired. A number tells you the era, not the player, so always match it to a name.

Choosing a listed name and number

The Justin Jefferson jersey page carries a current number. A retired number is a tribute, not a current-player jersey. The NFL assigns number ranges by position, which affects which numbers a player can get. Our NFL jersey number rules guide covers those ranges. For team styles, start at the Minnesota Vikings jerseys page.

Roster changes and older jerseys

A jersey can remain a valid record of a player’s Minnesota career after he leaves. The Vikings announced J.J. McCarthy’s trade to the Giants in September 2026; an older Vikings McCarthy jersey therefore represents his Minnesota period. Check the player’s team and uniform era as well as the number. Compare a purple home design with the Vikings throwback collection before choosing an older look.

Randy Moss: No. 84 and the Ring of Honor

The Vikings’ 2017 announcement identifies Moss with No. 84 and his Ring of Honor induction. The six-number retired list excludes 84. That distinction matters when choosing a tribute: Moss’s number remains his historical identifier even when another Viking can wear it. For a current receiver, the Justin Jefferson jersey collection is the listed route to No. 18; compare the design and audience on each product page.
