Miami Dolphins · Super Bowl history
  • Record through Super Bowl LX: 2 wins in 5 appearances.
  • Season labels refer to the team’s football season; the Super Bowl is played in the following calendar year.
  • The MVP column names the game award winner, including an opponent when this team lost.
  • Historical jersey colors are recorded separately from the designated home or away team.

Miami's two championships came in consecutive seasons, but they were won in different jersey colors. The five-game record also includes an earlier defeat and two later returns. Reading the complete sequence keeps the perfect season, the repeat championship and the broader franchise history connected without merging them into one event.

When did the Dolphins win the Super Bowl?

The Dolphins Super Bowl wins came in VII and VIII, completing the 1972 and 1973 seasons. The games were played in January 1973 and January 1974. Miami beat Washington 14–7 in VII and Minnesota 24–7 in VIII. Those are two separate championships, each with its own opponent, game MVP and uniform.

The first title completed Miami's perfect 1972 season. That is why the season year is central to its identity even though the final was played in 1973. The second title belongs to the following season and should not be folded into the undefeated-season label.

Miami Dolphins Super Bowl wins therefore totals two through LX. The perfect-season achievement and the back-to-back championship achievement overlap in the first game, but they are different ways of describing the team's success. A collector can celebrate either without assigning both descriptions to every item from the era.

The first three appearances were consecutive

Miami reached its first Super Bowl after the 1971 season but lost VI 24–3 to Dallas. Roger Staubach received the game MVP award. That appearance came before the two championship seasons, making the full sequence loss, win, win rather than three titles.

Jake Scott was MVP in VII, while Larry Csonka earned the award in VIII. The awards give the consecutive championships different individual reference points. A quarterback-centered summary would miss the safety and running back officially recognized in those title games.

The three straight appearances also help explain why photographs from the early Dolphins era can be mislabeled. A familiar helmet and aqua-and-orange palette may belong to any of the three seasons. The opponent, Roman numeral and jersey color should be checked together before attaching a specific championship claim.

The later returns and the Dolphins’ last Super Bowl win

Miami returned after the 1982 season and lost XVII 27–17 to Washington. The teams had met in VII, but the rematch ended differently. Washington's John Riggins was MVP. A reference to “the Washington Super Bowl” therefore needs the game number to say which result it means.

The fifth appearance came in XIX after the 1984 season. San Francisco won 38–16, with Joe Montana as MVP. Through LX, XIX remains Miami's latest appearance, while VIII remains the Dolphins’ last Super Bowl win. The most recent trip and most recent championship belong to different points in the timeline.

The complete record is 2–3. It includes both the early championship peak and the later teams that reached the final. Counting only the victories is useful for a title list, but the appearance table provides the fuller context for historical jerseys from those other seasons.

What Miami wore: the aqua championship matters

Miami wore aqua in VI, white in VII, aqua in VIII, aqua in XVII and white in XIX. The second championship was won in aqua against Minnesota white. It should not be illustrated as another white-jersey victory simply because white is a familiar Dolphins uniform choice.

The VII and XVII Washington games also reversed the relevant jersey colors: Miami wore white in the first meeting and aqua in the later one. That contrast is useful for identifying historical images. It is not an explanation of why one game was won and the other lost.

A game-specific comparison should also consider the full era's trim, numbering and construction. A modern Nike item in aqua can celebrate Miami's identity without being an exact VIII reproduction. The product's stated edition determines what is being offered; a shared base color establishes only part of the historical resemblance.

Shop the two-title era with a clear reference

Use the main team collection for the broadest view, compare Dolphins home jerseys when considering the aqua color family, and browse the legends jersey collection for an earlier player era. The category name does not replace the actual title-game uniform record.

For a paired display, white for VII and aqua for VIII makes the two championships visually distinct. Add the season and MVP to each label. Then check the name, number and any included decoration on the chosen product. A wearable era tribute can be meaningful without claiming original game-worn provenance or an exact historical patch that the listing does not specify.
