Famous numbers in Chargers history

Philip Rivers wore 17 and is not on the retired list. LaDainian Tomlinson's 21 and Junior Seau's 55 are the numbers San Diego fans ask for most. Seau is also a Hall of Famer. The Pro Football Hall of Fame table lists Johnny Unitas wearing 19 in 1973, the same number as Lance Alworth, who is the one with 19 retired. Check the name on the back before you order.

Retirement ceremonies and dates

The Chargers have spread their retirements across four decades. Fouts' 14 came on March 24, 1988, soon after he finished his career. Alworth's 19 was retired on November 20, 2005, and Seau's 55 followed on May 11, 2012. Tomlinson's 21 was retired on November 21, 2015, and Joiner and Winslow were honored together on September 10, 2023. Because Alworth played in the 1960s AFL years and Winslow and Joiner in the Air Coryell years, the six numbers cover three different eras of the team.

Chargers Hall of Famers and their numbers

The Chargers Hall of Fame is the franchise’s own honor. It is separate from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, so check which institution a player’s honor refers to. Neither label alone tells you that a number is retired. Use the retired-number table above for that status; the selected Canton players below illustrate why the name and number still need to be read together.

Can you buy any number?

Yes, as a fan jersey. A retired number is a tribute style because no current player wears it. The Chargers jersey collection lists current players first, and the throwback jerseys suit a legend's number best. For position ranges, see the NFL jersey number rules.
