How to Make a Football Jersey: Custom Name and Number Rules
Posted by JerseyZenith on Oct 25th 2026
- Names use capital letters A to Z and spaces.
- Numbers are two digits.
- Limits vary by jersey; check the product page.
This guide explains name and number limits on custom NFL jerseys. The limits come from the NFL's help page and team stores, and individual jerseys can differ.
NFL jersey customization rules
| Rule | Typical limit | Source note |
|---|---|---|
| Name length | About 10 to 12 characters including spaces | NFL's customer help page (about 13 years old); the Eagles' store says 10 |
| Name characters | Capital letters A to Z and spaces | NFL help page and Fanatics' NFL jersey rules |
| Number | Two digits, 0 to 9 in each digit | Steelers Pro Shop caps numbers at two digits |
| Retired players | Not accepted on current-team jerseys | NFL help summary |
| Current players | Name and number must match the team's roster | NFL help summary |
| Content | Offensive or profane text is rejected | NFL help summary |
These are general limits from the NFL's help page and team stores, and they are not guaranteed for every jersey. Team stores disagree: the Steelers Pro Shop lists a name of up to 12 characters in one place and up to 16 in another. Always check the limit in the customization step of the product page.
How many letters can a custom name have?
Most custom jerseys allow about 10 to 12 characters, and spaces count as characters. The Eagles' official store limits names to 10 characters. A shorter name looks cleaner on the nameplate. If you want a longer name, check the product page; some jerseys allow more.
What numbers can you choose?
Numbers are two digits, and many stores allow 0 to 99. A current-player jersey must match the team's roster. Real players' ranges depend on position; see our NFL jersey number rules for what players may wear. A custom jersey that is not tied to a player can usually use any number the store allows.
Which fonts and styles are used?
Lettering depends on the jersey. In our 3D jersey designer the lettering is drawn to match photos of the real jersey, and it is not an official font file. Previews are a close match, not a copy.
What jersey styles can you customize?
Check each listing for the styles and tiers that can be customized. Custom Game jerseys use heat-applied names and numbers, according to an official team-store description of a Nike custom Game jersey; see stitched vs screen-printed.

What the 3D preview shows
In the preview you can type a name of up to 10 characters; on the Cowboys model you can also enter a number. The preview is built from product photos and hidden parts are estimates, so it is a guide, not an exact picture. See the 3D designer page for the teams available.
Customizing for kids
Youth jerseys can be customized in some listings. Check the size chart and the name limit, as youth jerseys may have a different limit than adult jerseys. The NFL help page we found says adult and youth jerseys allow roughly 10 to 12 characters, but it is an old page.

How to make a football jersey tighter or looser
If you plan to make a football jersey tighter, choose a close-fitting tier: Game fits loose, Limited is more regular and Elite is closest to the body. Our size chart shows each fit. A custom name does not change the size, so pick the size first.
What the letters on a jersey mean
Letters on a jersey can be a name, a tribute patch or initials: the GSH on the Chicago Bears jersey stands for George Stanley Halas. Custom jerseys carry only the name and number you choose. See our GSH guide.
