Before the G

The Packers wore leather helmets until 1951, when they adopted the metallic gold plastic headgear they still use. Wikipedia says the team used several logos before 1961, but the G is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet. After 1950 the team used a green "Packers" script with a football between goalposts, and in 1954 a logo showing a passing quarterback over a Wisconsin silhouette appeared and lasted until 1961. A 1959 alternate mark with an interlocking yellow GB went on caps, shirts and jackets, not helmets.

The 1961 G

The G arrived in 1961, when Vince Lombardi asked equipment manager Gerald "Dad" Braisher to design a logo. The Packers first wore it in an intra-squad game on August 5, 1961. Sources disagree on who drew it. Packers.com credits Braisher and a St. Norbert College art student named John Gordon, while other accounts credit one or the other. They also disagree on the shape: Wikipedia says the oval G was added in 1961, while a Packers.com history says the original G was football-shaped and became the oval G in 1970. We report both.

The G stands for Green Bay, not for Packers, as the team’s own article title puts it. The Packers wore it as the helmet logo through the Lombardi years and beyond. A gold border was reported added in 1980.

Names behind the logos

The early nickname history explains why the team has no old animal logo. Wikipedia lists the team as the Indian Packers in 1919 and 1920, the Acme Packers in 1921 and the Blues in 1922. The sponsor Indian Packing Company gave Curly Lambeau $500 for uniforms, on the condition that the team carry its name, so the earliest identity was a company name and not a logo. The Packers.com history says the 1921 jerseys carried white "ACME PACKING" lettering.

The Rivalries GB in 2026

The 2026 Rivalries jersey has a modernized interlocking GB logo on the chest, which WBAY says echoes the mark used on sideline and practice gear in the Lombardi era. The jersey collar reads "Making History Since 1919", and the back of the helmet reads "Go Pack Go". The Packers also declined Nike’s Elite 51 changes in 2012, accepting only the required supplier and league logos.

Logos and your jersey

A jersey carries the marks that were current for its style. A throwback listing shows older marks, and a current home or away listing shows the current ones, so check the style name and the product photo before you order. The Nike Game vs Limited vs Elite guide explains how the tiers differ, and the NFL jersey size chart helps you choose a size. Wear the Packers logo

The logo story is only half of the picture. Shop the Packers throwback jerseys for retro marks, the Green Bay Packers jerseys for the current set and the legends jerseys for past stars. For the uniforms around each logo, read the Packers uniform history. Fans who ask for a "cool packers logo" usually want the G or the interlocking GB, both of which appear on the throwback and Rivalries styles. Fans also search for “green bay packers logo”, “bay packers logo”, “cool green bay packers logo”, “packers logo cool”, “greenbay packers logo”, “green bay packers logo history”, “cool packers logo”, “history of the packers logo”, “packers logo history” and “green bay packers logos”. All of them point to the logo history above.
